Edgar’s Media is a quarterly publication and bimonthly newsletter that supports the Midwest’s arts and culture through rigorous criticism and long-form writing.
Based in Minneapolis, MN, Edgar’s goal is to amplify the ways we are connected — the people, creativity, and landscape.
Why Edgar's?
Minnesota's arts scene now outearns its farms, yet ask someone to name a Midwest art critic, and you'll likely get silence. There are terrific arts journalists here doing vital work, but reporting what happened isn't the same as saying why it mattered.
Criticism doesn't just judge art. It teaches people how to see it, giving audiences the language to engage rather than defer. Fran Lebowitz once warned about what's lost when that discerning audience disappears. Edgar's exists to build it back: critics who live here, know the artists, and are willing to take a stand.
Who is Edgar?
Edgar's Media is named for Edgar Hoffmann, the founder's grandfather and a small-town barfly. His family immigrated from Luxembourg to Iowa and eventually landed in Minnesota. He was inquisitive, resourceful, and deeply opinionated. Edgar didn’t suffer bullshit or fools and was never perfect. It’s this spirit the publication carries forward.
Nicole E. Soukup is the founder, editor, and publisher of Edgar's Media. A Minneapolis-based curator and cultural strategist with more than two decades in contemporary art, she's built a career championing overlooked artists and asking better questions about who gets seen. Edgar's is her invitation to think critically about the Midwest today: its people, its creativity, its landscape. It's a print magazine and digital home for readers who want depth, context, and honest engagement with the region.
Beyond Edgar's, Nicole works as an independent consultant, managing projects for private collections and offering writing and consulting services for creative non-profits, grounded in nearly 25 years of experience on grassroots, working boards.
